For over a decade, Mark was the Senior Advisor for Science and Exploration at the European Space Agency, where he was responsible for communicating the scientific promise and results of a wide range of missions across astronomy, heliophysics, planetary science, and human spaceflight. These included landmark missions such as Solar Orbiter, Mars Express, BepiColombo, JUICE, Planck, XMM-Newton, Gaia, Hubble, the James Webb Space Telescope, and Euclid, as well as highlighting scientific work conducted by astronauts on the International Space Station.
His career has taken him from the University of Edinburgh to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and various astronomical institutes in Europe, including positions in Heidelberg, Bonn and Potsdam. He has also held a professorship at the University of Exeter. He continues to work closely on space science as an Interdisciplinary Scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope Science Working Group, and as an adjunct scientist at the Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie in Heidelberg. His research focuses on the formation of stars and planetary systems in regions like the Orion Nebula.
Alongside his scientific career, Mark is known for building bridges between space science and cultural expression. Through Space Rocks, he has collaborated with musicians, visual artists and storytellers to explore how space inspires human creativity, participating in a wide range of creative projects and live events across Europe and beyond. His credits include the Ambition film series, performances with orchestras, over 500 public and professional talks around the world, and he has recently published a tour guide to the Universe.
Mark has been interviewed widely across international media and his outreach work has been recognised with several awards, including two Sir Arthur Clarke Awards and a Progressive Music Award. With a career that bridges rigorous science and creative communication, he offers a rare perspective on space exploration; what we’re learning, how we learn it, and why it matters.
Topics, Sessions And Talks
Mark McCaughrean explores the origins, architecture, and astonishing achievements of the James Webb Space Telescope, humanity’s most powerful space observatory. He describes key aspects of the telescope's design, and shares highlights from its first years of operation, from peering deep into the early universe to tracking young stars and planetary systems taking shape closer to home. With vivid insight drawn from personal involvement in the mission for almost three decades, Mark reveals how JWST is transforming our understanding of the cosmos and rewriting the story of where we come from.
Celebrating five decades of ambition and discovery, Mark McCaughrean offers a guided tour of ESA’s landmark missions, including the Huygens probe landing on Titan, the Rosetta mission to explore a comet, Gaia’s stunning 3D star maps, and Euclid’s quest to unravel dark energy. He explains how the ESA's collaborative, long-term approach powers Europe’s leadership in space science, sparks technological innovation, and inspires the next generation. Combining insight, clarity, and passion, Mark reflects on a legacy of excellence and a future rich with cosmic possibility.
Blazing, life-giving, and potentially dangerous, the Sun has fascinated humankind for millennia. Mark McCaughrean blends science with story, showing how the Sun works and modern missions like Solar Orbiter are revealing the Sun’s magnetic moods and solar storms in unprecedented detail. Alongside the science, he reflects on the Sun’s cultural role, artistic legacy, and impact on planetary habitability and possible dangers to our civilisation. With trademark warmth and intellect, Mark brings to life the star that made us and still shapes our world.
Mark McCaughrean recounts the extraordinary voyage of Rosetta, the European Space Agency mission that chased a comet across the solar system and captivated the world. He reveals the mission’s inner workings, from Philae’s dramatic landing to the scientific bounty unlocked on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko - clues to the early solar system and possibly the origins of Earth’s water. Combining technical insight with a storyteller’s flair, Mark revisits a moment when space science became a global spectacle and a cultural phenomenon.
As thousands upon thousands of satellites are launched into low Earth orbit, astronomers are facing a growing crisis. Mark McCaughrean examines the impact of satellite trails on deep space imaging, sharing findings from Hubble data and citizen science efforts. With clarity and urgency, he explores the consequences for scientific discovery and also our shared view of the night sky. This talk raises a vital question: how do we balance the use of space to enhance global connectivity with the preservation of humanity’s cosmic heritage?
